Call

ephemeral_coast_call.jpeg

This work emerged from my time spent at the coast, contemplating the concept of survival and the act of making and creating as a means of sustenance in a solitary coastal setting. It represents an exploration of working with the natural materials found in this location, as well as the debris and flotsam—an amalgamation of remnants from human activity and local industries, transported by the sea.

The creation took shape through the collection of washed-up coal, remnants of the area's industry that have transformed the shoreline sand into a glistening, crystallized black surface. Gradually, larger pieces of coal and driftwood were collected and assembled.

The circular fire formation deviates from the conventional purposes of a fire, such as cooking food or providing warmth. Instead, it harnesses the contemplative qualities of fire, serving as a space for introspection and reverie. Additionally, it acts as a marker, defining an area and exuding a presence that extends an inviting gesture to others.
